Hiring an employee that isn't a US Citizen

I have a situation for the first time-----hiring an employee that isn’t a United States Citizen.  I have a copy of his card from U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services and his USCIS number.  He has to renew every 18 months.  He has been here since 1996 as he worked at L’talia from 1996 to 2015.  Do I need to verify anything else?
